Re-introduce French to Curriculum, Lecturers Tell NUC


University French Teachers’ Association of Nigeria (UFTAN) has urged the National Universities Commission (NUC) to restore French Language as a General Studies (GST) Course in its new Core Curriculum and Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS) for universities.

In a communiqué issued during its 24th Conference and Annual General Meeting (AGM) held at the Nigeria French Language Village, Badagry, Lagos State recently, and signed by UFTAN President, Prof. Mufutau A. Tijani, and Secretary, Prof. Richard Ajah, the group also commended efforts of the French Embassy at facilitating the teaching of French in Nigeria and the cordial relationship re-established with the Nigeria French Language Village.

It reads: “UFTAN strongly urges all departments of French in all Nigerian universities to continue to send their students to the Nigeria French Language Village (NFLV) for the mandatory Language Immersion Programme”.

Prof. Joseph Nwabueze Obinaju of University of Uyo delivered the keynote address titled, “Emerging Trends in French Language Studies in Nigeria today,” while Prof. Victor O. Aire of University of Jos delivered the lead paper titled, “Remembering UFTAN’S Fallen Heroes (1997 – 2023).”

The theme for the 25th UFTAN Conference/AGM is, “French Teaching in Nigeria in a Digital Age; Challenges and Prospects” and the event will hold at the University of Jos, Plateau State.
