Jail Again for Eva Kaili and Marc Tarabella?

BRUSSELS – Eva Kaili and Marc Tarabella are back in front of Belgian justice. Two hearings will be held tomorrow morning at the Palais de Justice in Brussels to confirm the extension of the pre-trial detention for the former vice-president of the European Parliament and the Belgian MEP, in prison respectively since 9 December and 10 February last in scope of the Qatargate investigation. This was announced by a spokesman for the federal prosecutor’s office.

The two hearings come about two weeks after the decision of the Council Chamber to extend the prison sentence for at least another two months for Greek politics, and that of the mayor of the village of Anthisnes by at least another month. A resolution before which both suspects decided to appeal.

The defense – Kaili will be defended by the Greek lawyer Michalis Dimitrakopuolos, supported by the Belgian criminal lawyer Sven Mary, whose presence in the courtroom is however still in doubt. For weeks, the defenders have maintained the full innocence of the Greek politician and former TV presenter and say they are ready to do battle for her to be granted house arrest on a par with what was decided by the Belgian justice last Thursday for her comrade Francesco Giorgi, who also ended up in prison last December 9 and returned today under the electronic bracelet regime in his home in Brussels by the couple’s two-year-old daughter.

The socialist MEP Tarabella, dragged together with his colleague Andrea Cozzolino (now under house arrest in Naples) in the maxi-investigation following the revelations of Panzeri, is instead represented by the Belgian lawyer Pierre Monville.
